"When peace like a river..."

Josh and Beth Paulick on May 6, 2019

“When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, ‘It is well, it is well, with my soul.’”  Avery has been asking for this song for her bedtime song a lot recently and some nights it’s been a little difficult to sing.  My grandma loved this song and it was a song we sang at her funeral.  I am amazed at the story behind this song.  With a father writing this song while traveling near the spot he lost his four daughters after they died in a shipwreck.  Sometimes it’s hard to understand how someone can have that much faith.
This has been a very challenging month.  We had exams that started at the end of April.  In the middle of exams, there was a family emergency.  Beth (and Owen) flew back to the United States to be with family during that time. It was so nice to be able to be back with in the United States with family, but it was a very challenging time.  And in some ways, challenging to be back in France when part of her longs to still be with family there.
Josh continued taking his exams and passed them.  He is continuing on with the next class on schedule.  Beth finished the exams upon returning to France, but unfortunately did not pass her exams.  She was given the option of continuing on in the class she is currently in, or taking the course over again.  After much praying and discussion, Beth has decided to retake the class.  Overall, this really shouldn’t set her back a lot, but was a little discouraging.  Beth really feels this is the best option to give a better base of the French language.
We just finished 2 weeks of vacances (vacation), it was a nice break.  We were able to go spend some time in Lyon, France and then head to Paris for a few days.  We are trying to make an effort to speak in French whenever possible.  It was nice to get away for a few days and spend some time together as a family.  Beth’s brother and family came for part of the second week of vacances.  It was really nice to spend some time with family and show them around Albertville.  It was really nice for the cousins to all spend time together, too.

However, during the vacances, our teammates, the Chmil family who are in France with us, had a tragic accident where their oldest son got burned.  Hudson, who is 9, was cooking dinner and got burned on 10-12% of his body.  Some of the burns needed grafts, so he had surgery two weeks ago to get the grafts placed.  He went to the operating room again last week to check on the grafts, and praise the Lord, so far the grafts are doing well.  Hudson is in a hospital about 2 hours away while his other 4 siblings are here in Albertville with their nanny, Hannah.  This is very hard on their family and it will still be a long road for them.  Please continue to pray for Hudson and their family.  Eli and Josh were able to go see Hudson yesterday and Eli really enjoyed getting to visit with Hudson.  I know he misses him a lot right now.
Last week we started back in classes and this will be the longest stretch of classes.  We are still trying to find a balance of making sure we are getting rest, studying, spending time with the kids, spending time with the Lord, keeping up with the housework and still trying to be purposeful with our time here.  We both are trying to meet with language partners once a week to spend some time speaking French.  Please just pray that we would be able to finish this semester strong and find some time to get rejuvenated, as we are both just a bit worn down and discouraged.  Thank you all for your prayers!
